So, this week we’ve been racking our brains to think of a way to make Fridays even better and we think we’ve cracked it.
To celebrate our new partnership with fairsharemusic.com we’ve got a great little competition for you to win some free tunes.
Fairsharemusic has over eight and a half million tracks including the hottest new releases starting at only 79p. Just like every other music download site right? Wrong.
The difference with fairsharemusic is that for every track you download, fairsharemusic donates half the profits to us. You don’t have to do anything. Just sit back and feel good.
And what’s more, the first time you visit the deal gets even sweeter. Download an album and they will donate an extra 10% to us. Spend over £10 and we get an extra 20%, and if you spend over £20 they will donate an amazing 50% more.
We’re pretty excited about it and to mark the occasion we’ve got 30 free tracks to give away.
All you have to do is pick your top three tracks from fairsharemusic’s library of eight and a half million songs and tell us about them in the comments below. It is that easy.
We’re giving away 10 tracks as the top prize and 20 other lucky winners will each receive one track each. And when we say ‘track’, we mean you can choose any song you like from fairsharemusic’s library of millions!
Get going and we will announce the winners at 4pm next Friday, 6 August.

UPDATE: 6 AUGUST 2010
We have just done the draw and the lucky winner of our top prize of 10 tracks is Sophie Count. Thanks everyone for taking part and don’t be too disheartened, you’ve all won a track! We’ll be in touch shortly. Have a good weekend.
Laura Marling’s Rambling Man
What an artist – and only 20 years old. Hope she get’s a Mercury Award
Arcade Fire’s Windowsill
Bit of a rage against American cultural and economic hegemony but in a non-shouty, intelligent way.
Empire of the Sun’s Walking on a Dream
Great song for dancing/jogging or walking around in public making making movements that onlookers will be amused and bemused by.
Better, Tom Baxter – one of the songs played during my Civil Partnership in September 2008. Takes me back to that day every time I listen to it. Wonderful.
Hallelujah, Katherine Jenkins – Her voice can wipe away the stresses of the day. I love other covers of this song but Katherine’s just melts me away
Bad Romance, Lady GaGa – An anthem that gets everyone dancing and smiling and even joining in. love it
The Chap – We Work In Bars
A bouncy, feisty little number from the London based experimental pop group. This is the perfect tonic for the 20-30 year old creative type, who has come home from a stagnant week of work and is getting ready to meet their mates down the local boozer – for chatting, intellectualising and dreaming.
Prescilla – Bat For Lashes
This song tells a story in the way every song should, allowing the listener to mull over the hidden gems in the lyrics time and time again. Poetry for the soul dripped onto an intoxicating bed of harps, female intuition and cloudy incense. Ahhhh…
Out of Space – Prodigy
Classic track. This kind of oldskool Rave Hardcore never gets old. An added bonus is knowing that the classic reggae sample was produced by the ledged that is Lee “Scratch” Perry. Gorgeous. A satisfying and energizing mash up for all the family! ;D
OK I start a 2 week holiday today and I’m feeling doubly Friday so here are my three Friday Feelgoods:
Send me on my way (Various Artists),
We No Speak Americano (D Cup/Yolanda Be Cool)
and last but not least
Fill Your Heart (David Bowie).
Happy weekend everyone!
My top three tracks are:
1. Torin Torin (Album) by Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni ba featured on the late, great Charlie Gillett’s Anywhere On This Road comp.
2. What’s Hardcore? by K’naan from his live album, The Dusty Foot On The Road – Pretty anything by K’naan is worth it. Great background produced some clever rap music.
3. First Love by Emmy The Great from her First Love album – I love the bitter lyrics sang by such a sweet voice.
My favourite songs are:
Stereophonics – Dakota. Just the best happy song I have heard. Upbeat songs with reminiscent vocals/lyrics. Can’t beat it!!
Jamiroquai – Seven Days in Sunny June – Reminds me of my first holiday without parents and the girl I kissed that long long time ago…
Feeder – Just a Day – My Uni song, reminds me of being with my great friends (intoxicated) and just being completely happy.
1) ‘Chase The Tear’ – Portishead <= LOVE this track SO much and the band are just AMAZING. This track was produced especially for Amnesty!! We we’re in Portugal for the Amnesty European Youth and Student Meeting and this song was used in our follow up when we had our picture slide show, good times
2) ‘Uprising’ – Muse <= This track is my all time favourite when I’m working on stuff at the National Union of Students, always gets me all fired up and ready to campaign when motivation is down.
3) ‘Cheap And Cheerful’ –The Kills <= A house party MUST, many memories to this song, not too loud and in your face, yet not too ambient to be forgotten, The Kills are *very* good at this type of music, check them out =]
Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes – beautiful nostalgic American love song which makes me want to move to LA and spend weekends travelling through American deserts.
The Girl and the Robot – Royksopp – I saw them at Exit festival in Serbia this summer and the female singer dressed up as an owl, and did a cover of Wuthering Heights.
Black Cab by Jens Lekman, this borrows a beautiful tune right from a 60s band called the Lefte Bank and has lovely bittersweet lyrics.
Looks like a great selection of music on their site but I’m choosing current tunes I can’t get out of my head!!
1. We No Speak Americano (D-Cup/Yolanda Be Cool) – great summer tune that makes me smile whenever I hear it
2. Love The Way You Lie (Eminem feat Rihanna) – my favourite song at the moment! Loving Eminem’s new material and collaborations…
3. Beautiful Monster (Ne-Yo) – this song sums up my beautiful 8 month old kitten!!
I’m so excited about this vibe! Just in time too, I totes need to restock music. A quick search of a few favourite artists and check check check they’re all there. Excellent stuff, I look forward to downloading with a difference.
Lost Coastlines by Okkervil River, I love their tunes. They make me want to grow up in Austin, Texas. Hot summers & tangled relationships. Youth.
The Mountain Goats & The Decemberists – everything they’ve both ever done. Well done chaps. I love following the narratives, the elegant and elaborate stories & worlds you create.
Infected Mushroom – Pletzura. The album this track is from and this track in particular marks my birth into the world of music and represents my first of many coming of age moments.
My top 3:
1. Strings of Life – Soul Central remix 20 years after the original from the great Derrick May, a timeless classic
2. Le Voie Le Soleil – Subliminal Cuts
3. Peace & Harmony – Brothers in Rhythm, “disappeared” from my record bag many years ago, just rediscovered on the site and downloaded!
1. ‘Around the world’ by Red hot chili peppers – Just because I have seen this played live and it was epic! Especially as it was raining heavily at the time! An amazing guitar opening from John Frusciante, sad he is no longer with the chilis!
2. The xx – ‘Islands’ – A beautiful track from this mercury-nominated album. The vocals are poignant and soulful, you can tell why legends like Jay-z and Beyonce are fans! The xx have had immense success already and I wish them all the best.
3. Paul Simon- ‘You can call me al’ – Bit of a random third choice compared to the other two but I love this song and wish I had grown up in the 80s to enjoy it first time around!
Thanks xxx
A dustland fairytale – the killers.
A brilliantly composed song, with beautiful orchestration and with lyrics that move me to tears every time.
U2 – where the streets have no name
one of the greatest songs of all time, brilliant message of peace woven into a fantastic rock anthems
the killers – all these things I’ve done
spine tingling song – and when you’ve seen the song live and sung ‘i’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier’ it just makes the song even more memorable. And that’s on top of a near perfect song
My top three track are:
1. “Do you realise?” by the Flaming Lips, hearing it makes always makes me feel like the happiest little Indian around.
2. I love Elbow’s “Grace under Pressure”, reminds me to stay calm when all I want to do is scream!
3. Miss Misery by Elliot Smith, the early version. Just because.
1) Ancient Rain – Mary Coughlan
2)No No Keshagesh – Buffy sainte Marie
3) Unstoppable – Santigold
Congratulations Sophie!
Thanks to the Amnesty Web Team as well! Free track greatly appreciated!
